Vision correction, also called refractive surgery, improves how light focuses inside your eye. This helps images land precisely on the retina. Based on your vision and prescription, your surgeon may recommend corneal reshaping with a laser. Other options include a lens implant or a prescription intraocular lens.

LASIK

EVO ICL is a lens implant placed behind the iris and in front of your natural lens to correct nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism.

RLE is an elective lens replacement procedure in which your natural lens is removed and replaced with an IOL.

Recommending The Right Procedure

To determine candidacy, your care team will assess specific factors: your current prescription and whether it has been stable for at least a year; the thickness, shape, and health of your cornea; the quality of your tear film and presence of dry eye symptoms; your pupil size; overall eye health; and your lifestyle, including your work and sports activities. Meeting these criteria is important for safe and effective results.

A comprehensive evaluation allows your refractive surgeon to measure your eyes and identify conditions that could increase risk. Your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations for each option. If one procedure is not suitable, another is often safer, meaning you still have choices.

What to Expect From Consultation Through Recovery

Your consultation

A vision correction consultation typically includes advanced diagnostic testing and a dilated eye exam. Contact lenses can change the shape of your cornea. For accurate measurements, a contact lens “break” must be performed before testing. At Barnet Dulaney Perkins, soft lenses are removed 72 hours prior to surgery. Hard lenses must be removed 2 weeks before to help measurements reflect your natural corneal shape.

Procedure day

Most vision correction procedures are outpatient. You will receive numbing eye drops and need transportation home. You may be asked to wear protective eye shields and will likely use prescribed drops to support healing, prevent infection, and reduce inflammation.

Recovery and follow-up

Recovery varies by procedure. LASIK patients may see clearly in a day or two, whereas PRK may take several days to achieve clarity. EVO ICL and RLE may cause mild discomfort, with follow-up visits needed to monitor healing.

A note on safety and side effects:
All surgery carries risks. With refractive procedures, side effects can include dry eye, glare or halos at night, light sensitivity, fluctuating vision, or the need for glasses as your eyes change. Your surgeon will review the benefits and risks specific to your eyes and procedural options.

Commonly Asked Vision Correction Options

Vision correction surgery refers to procedures designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Many adults with glasses or contact lenses may be candidates for vision correction surgery. In general, good candidates:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have had a stable prescription for at least one year
  • Have healthy eyes and corneas
  • Are free of certain eye conditions that could affect healing

 

A detailed eye exam and advanced imaging tests are needed to determine candidacy. Healthy corneas and stable vision are important factors in achieving safe and successful outcomes.

Vision correction procedures such as LASIK, PRK, and implantable lens procedures have been performed for decades and are considered safe and highly effective when performed on properly selected patients.

Vision correction procedures are designed to provide long-lasting results. Procedures such as LASIK permanently reshape the cornea to improve how the eye focuses light.

Vision correction procedures are not painful. Numbing eye drops are used during surgery to keep the eye comfortable.

Your vision correction team and/or counselor will provide detailed instructions and medications to keep you comfortable during recovery.

The best way to determine the right vision correction option is through a comprehensive eye exam and consultation.

Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after vision correction surgery. However, results vary from person to person. Some patients may still use glasses occasionally for certain activities, such as night driving or reading. Age-related vision changes can also occur over time.
