Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that develops most often with age. Schedule a cataract evaluation with us today to find out if you’re a candidate for cataract surgery

Understanding Cataracts

Cataracts often cause blurry, cloudy vision and other frustrating symptoms that make everyday life challenging. Colors may dull, and you might find difficulty seeing at night or increased light sensitivity when driving or outdoors. Fortunately, there’s a safe solution. Cataract surgery is a quick outpatient procedure that replaces the eye’s cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial one – restoring your sight and bringing back the vibrant world of color and detail. At Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center, we’re proud to offer advanced cataract surgery for patients across Arizona, helping you regain clear vision with a professional yet warm, personal touch.

Common Cataract Symptoms

Objects appear out of focus or filmy. Cataracts can make it seem as though you’re looking through a fogged-up window or frosted glass, causing constant haze in your vision.

Night vision worsens, making driving after dark hard. You might notice glare or halos around lights, such as oncoming headlights, in low-light conditions.

Bright sunlight or indoor lights may cause you to squint or feel discomfort. Cataracts often make your eyes more sensitive to light, and glare can be more intense (“light sensitivity”).

Colors look dull, muted, or have a yellow tint. You may not realize how much vibrancy you’re missing until after treatment, when whites look white again and colors are vivid.

Cataracts can cause your eyeglass prescription to change frequently. You might find yourself needing stronger glasses every year as the cataract progresses.

How Cataract Surgery Works

Cataract surgery is among the most common and successful procedures performed today. During the procedure, your eye surgeon makes a tiny incision (often laser-assisted or ultrasonic technology) to remove the cloudy lens affected by the cataract. The clouded lens is gently broken up and suctioned out, and then a new, clear lens is inserted in its place. This artificial replacement lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL), permanently takes over the job of focusing light in your eye. The surgery is typically done with numbing eye drops and sometimes a mild sedative, so you’ll be awake but comfortable and feel little to no pain. It is an outpatient procedure – no hospital stay needed – and usually only takes about 15–30 minutes per eye.

What Conditions Does Cataract Surgery Correct?

1

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens has an irregular shape, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. A toric intraocular lens (IOL) can correct this irregularity and give you sharper distance vision.

2

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is the age-related loss of near focusing ability, making it harder to read or see up close. Advanced technology lenses, such as multifocal, trifocal, or extended focus IOLs can reduce or eliminate your dependence on reading glasses or bifocals.

3

Hyperopia

Hyperopia causes difficulty seeing objects up close, while distance vision may remain clearer. Cataract surgery with the right IOL choice can correct hyperopia, helping you see better at all distances without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Benefits of Cataract Surgery

1

Clear & Sharp Vision Restored

No more hazy or blurry eye sight! Faces, signs, and text become much easier to see.

2

Bright and Vibrant Colors

You’ll notice colors look richer and whites look true white again (cataracts tend to make everything look yellowish or dull).

3

Improved Night Vision & Less Glare

Cataract surgery makes night driving safer. Headlights and streetlights won’t cause as much glare or starburst effects.

4

Reduced Dependence on Glasses

Many patients find they need their glasses much less after cataract surgery, especially if they opt for advanced lens options.

What to Expect After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery has a quick recovery. Most patients notice clearer vision within a couple of days. You’ll use prescription eye drops for a few weeks to protect against infection and aid healing. Colors will likely appear brighter, and you’ll have far less glare when driving at night. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and will schedule follow-up visits to ensure your eye heals properly. While you should avoid heavy lifting or rubbing your eye for a short time, you can get back to most normal activities within a day or two of surgery. By about a month, your vision will have stabilized into its new, clearer focus.

Cataract Surgery Q & A

Common early cataract symptoms include blurry vision, cloudy or glass-like vision, faded colors, and increased light sensitivity. Many people also notice difficulty seeing at night, especially glare or halos around headlights. Cataracts usually develop gradually, so symptoms may worsen slowly over time.

Cataract surgery is typically recommended when vision problems begin interfering with daily activities such as reading, driving, working, or enjoying hobbies. If cloudy or blurry vision cannot be corrected with glasses or contacts, a cataract evaluation can determine whether surgery is the right next step.

Yes. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and safest surgical procedures in the U.S. Modern techniques and advanced technology have made the procedure highly effective, with excellent visual outcomes for the vast majority of patients.

During cataract surgery, your surgeon removes the eye’s cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is outpatient, usually takes less than 30 minutes, and is performed using numbing eye drops to keep you comfortable.

Yes. Cataract surgery is designed specifically to eliminate cloudy, hazy, or glass-like vision caused by cataracts. Most patients experience significantly clearer vision within days of surgery, with continued improvement as the eye heals.

In addition to standard monofocal lenses, advanced technology lenses may be available. These can help correct astigmatism and reduce dependence on reading glasses or bifocals. Your surgeon will help you choose the lens option that best fits your lifestyle and vision goals.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within 1–2 days. Vision often improves quickly, though it may take a few weeks to fully stabilize. You’ll use prescription eye drops for a short time and attend follow-up visits to ensure proper healing.

Cataract surgery is generally painless. Patients typically feel little more than mild pressure during the procedure. Some light irritation or scratchiness afterward is normal but usually resolves within a few days.

Absolutely. Cataracts often cause glare, halos, and poor contrast in low light. Removing the cloudy lens can dramatically improve night vision, reduce glare from headlights, and make nighttime driving safer and more comfortable.

Scheduling is easy. You can request a cataract evaluation online or call our office to speak with a member of our team. We serve patients across Arizona, with convenient locations throughout the state.
